Exclusive | Apple Is No Longer Working on Under-Display Touch ID for iPhone

After multiple talks with sources related to the matter who wish to remain anonymous, I can now confirm Apple engineers are no longer working on an under-display fingerprint sensor for the iPhone.

This rumor has been floating around for quite a lot of time, and it was true, for the most part. I’ve read some fake reports about it, but most were very accurate. The Cupertino-based company has worked on this for years, but it seems like Face ID is the way to go, especially since Apple decided in January to move all their Touch ID efforts and resources to the team working on Face ID.

All this makes sense now that the iOS 15.4 beta allows Face ID unlocking with a face mask, and this will continue to be the trend in almost all Apple products. The next step is obvious, and it will be ready sooner than later—under-display Face ID sensors.

We could’ve seen this technology in the iPhone 13 Pro, but Apple ultimately decided to push it back a couple of years to work on that technology. This makes a lot of sense, considering what most under-display cameras look like; their quality isn’t up to iPhone standards.

I won’t deny it is a cool gimmick, but that’s all it is. I would find it unacceptable that the front camera of the latest iPhone looked worse than that of the past model, so I totally understand the company’s decision on this matter.

If I get the best possible technology and features in exchange, I’m okay with waiting two more years for a notch-less iPhone. I’ve asked my sources which will be the first notch-less iPhone, and all of them agree it will be the iPhone 15 Pro, or whatever it’s called.

Apple will release this device around September of 2023. I hope the company doesn’t push back the plans for a notch-less iPhone again. Most of us have been waiting for years, and now 2023 seems like a very reasonable date. However, we are talking about Apple, famous for pushing back announcements or even canceling products that the company had already announced, like AirPower.
