Samsung has been working on foldable displays for quite a while now, and last year, the technology finally made its debut on the Samsung Galaxy Fold smartphone. To date, there still aren’t that many companies coming forward with similar devices, but that could change in the future.This is because Samsung Display has announced the commercialization of its ultra-thin glass that can be used in the development of smartphones with foldable displays. According to Dennis Choi, vice president of the mobile display marketing team at Samsung Display, “With our existing polyimide cover window, development of the new extremely flexible UTG cover window ‘Samsung UTG’ now enables us to meet more demanding customer needs.”
He adds, “Clearly, Samsung UTG is a highly enticing manufacturing alternative which serves as another important example of our dedication to technology advancement and manufacturing excellence.” It is unclear as to who might be looking to purchase Samsung’s foldable displays, but with Samsung making it available to other companies, it should lead to the development of more similar devices.
So far, we can only count four companies that have made (or are making) foldable devices. This includes Samsung, Huawei, Motorola, and Royole. At the moment the jury is still out on foldable devices, where it does seem to be a good idea in concept, the execution so far has been met with mixed reviews.
